Drinking alcohol can lower testosterone levels, causing erectile dysfunction, and reduce sperm production. Drinking alcohol for a long time can also lead to liver disease, which can affect fertility. A study published in 2014 showed drinking five glasses of alcohol each week could reduce a man’s sperm quality and more alcohol was correlated with weaker sperm quality. It’s also a good practice for a wife’s pregnancy because a man’s alcohol consumption can make it more difficult for a woman to stop drinking, which is very important for the health of the baby.

Smoke
Smokers may have lower sperm counts than non-smokers. In fact, secondhand smoke has been shown to reduce fertility in pregnancy. In 2016, a study showed smoking was associated with decreased sperm count, decreased sperm motility, and poor sperm morphology.

Obesity
Being overweight or underweight can have a negative impact on sperm count and can lower libido. According to the CDC, an estimated 70 percent of people were overweight or obese in 2014 and 1.7 percent were underweight in 2010. The first step to gaining weight is to regulate your diet. So, be sure to talk to your healthcare provider about ways to increase your nutritional intake.

There are many different underlying conditions that can affect male fertility, such as tumors, celiac disease, and varicocele, a condition in which large blood vessels cause the testicles to overheat. If you have been diagnosed with any of these conditions, or are concerned about any conditions you may have, talk to your doctor.
