5 Stars who Succumbed to Addiction: A Look into the Tragic Endings of Monroe, Presley, Cobain, Smith, and Houston

Even the successful and famous are sometimes powerless against drug and alcohol addiction. OBOZREVATEL spoke about 5 stars who resorted to forbidden methods to find inspiration and cope with the pressure of fame.

Struggling with writer’s block and personal turmoil, Monroe became dependent on drugs and sleeping pills. On the fateful evening of August 4, 1962, she turned to friend Peter Lawford to say goodbye to her loved ones.

A few hours later, the actress was found lifeless in her bedroom. The official autopsy report confirmed the cause of death was a drug overdose. Her untimely death sparked a wave of suicides among her loyal fans.

Elvis Presley, the king of rock and roll, also struggled with this. Initially using drugs to improve his performance, he gradually fell into a dangerous addiction. Despite attempts at rehabilitation, his addiction led to his death on August 16, 1977.

The bride found him dead on the bathroom floor, but could not bring him back to life. Heart failure caused by a drug overdose was the cause of his tragic end.

Kurt Cobain, the enigmatic frontman of Nirvana, suffered a similarly tragic fate. Although his cause of death was ruled a self-inflicted gunshot wound, an autopsy found a lethal dose of heroin in his system. The celebrity’s struggle with drugs began in his youth under the influence of the musician’s peers and older friends.

Despite clinical death from an overdose, Cobain continued on his disastrous path. His death on April 5, 1994 left many questions unanswered.

Anna Nicole Smith, the iconic supermodel and actress, also became a victim of drug addiction. Fighting legal battles and being under constant stress, the star resorted to alcohol, drugs and sleeping pills to cope with the situation. Numerous plastic surgeries and the tragic loss of her son further increased her dependence on psychoactive substances.

On February 8, 2007, Smith was found dead in a hotel room in Florida. An overdose of analgesics and sleeping pills took her life.

A similar fate befell Whitney Houston, the famous singer with a divine voice. The artist’s struggle with drug addiction became known in 2000, when marijuana was found in her luggage. Her life turned into a roller coaster, with periods of rehabilitation and relapse.

On February 11, 2012, Houston was found unconscious in a hotel bathroom and could not be revived. Her cause of death was ruled to be drowning due to atherosclerotic heart disease and cocaine use.
