JAKARTA – Inside space exploration full of challenges, success often goes hand in hand with big risks. Stepping into untouched territory has resulted in extraordinary accomplishments. But it also has the potential to bring heart-stirring hardships and tragedies.
So, here are 5 space missions that have experienced disaster:
1. Apollo-Soyuz Test Project: Gas Leak
The Apollo-Soyuz Test Project in July 1975 was a feat in space travel and politics: it was the first joint space flight between the United States and the Soviet Union and marked the end of the space race between the two countries.
Surprisingly, the mission itself went nearly flawlessly (up until their return). Two spacecraft, one American with three astronauts and the other Soviet Union with two cosmonauts, meet in Earth orbit and dock with each other, allowing space explorers to switch between probes.
After 44 hours they split up and, after a few more days, both probes began their descent to Earth.
On re-entry, damage occurs to the RCS, the reaction control system that regulates altitude, which causes nitrogen
Toxic tetroxide got into the cabin where the American Apollo astronauts were.
Luckily, the cabin was ventilated after the spacecraft landed and none of the astronauts were fatally injured.
2. STS-107: Musibah Shuttle Columbia
