Modern automatic car transmissions are sophisticated and complex mechanisms. Despite the high technological level of their construction, they are subject to intense wear because they often work under heavy loads. And they require special care, as damage can lead to complex and expensive repairs or even cause emergency situations on the road.
Therefore, it is very important to be careful when choosing a used car with automatic transmission.
There are 5 signs that may indicate that the transmission may have a problem:
– One of the most obvious and understandable signs of a faulty unit includes shaking and vibrations that occur when driving – they are felt when changing gears. Such symptoms indicate a malfunction of the automatic transmission valve. This component often wears out, especially with improper use.
– Another common symptom is a transmission fluid leak, usually due to worn or damaged rubber seals. The oil leak from the gearbox can be noticed if you look at the car from below – by simply lying under it, on a channel or if it is lifted on a lift in the workshop. And it is important to react immediately, because the lack of oil in the gearbox also usually leads to expensive repairs.
– If at the beginning of the movement the car has difficulty gaining speed and slippage is felt, then most likely the friction discs in the automatic gearbox are worn. It is also possible that the root of the problem is in the hydraulic unit, where one of the valves may be stuck.
– If, when driving an automatic, unusual sounds, buzzing or vibrations appear, which increase with increasing speed, this already indicates serious problems with the friction discs or a malfunction of the torque converter.
– A faulty gearbox control unit can shift gears incorrectly – this is an indicator of a problem in the unit, which can sometimes also cause the gears to lock up.
