(CNN) – An estimated 600 people were in a Texas park on Sunday when the fireworks started and shots were fired.
Fort Worth police went to Village Creek Park just before 7 p.m. and found five people injured, public information officer Buddy Calzada said during a news conference Sunday night.
There were around 600 people in the park when the fireworks started. Witnesses told police they heard 30 shots fired immediately after the fireworks, according to Calzada.
Responding officers found five people with injuries and transported them to local hospitals. Three suffered non-life threatening injuries and two others are in critical condition, Calzada said.
“The best thing we can do for them is obviously to pray and … get them medical attention right now,” Calzada said of the victims.
No additional information on the victims or possible suspects was provided during the press conference.
The police department’s gang unit is taking the lead, and state and federal partners are helping with the investigation, according to Calzada.
The order to stay home in Texas expired on May 1, and plans have been established to ease additional restrictions for the state. While city parks are open, people are still encouraged by social distance.
As for the large crowd, Calzada explained that while the department works to tell people to follow the rules of social distancing, they try not to comply with the summons.
“We have been saying that everyone would follow the rules that have been established,” Calzada said. “We have tried to work with everyone not to try to cite or fine them, but ultimately people have a choice and that is the choice they made tonight.”
