Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Some baby Newborns can be born with abnormalities in the genitalia, including hypospadias disorders.
The causes can be various, ranging from genetic conditions to environmental factors. However, with proper medical treatment, genital disorders can be treated.
Every parent wants their child to be born in perfect health. Even though you have implemented a healthy lifestyle during pregnancy, genital abnormalities can still occur due to genetic factors.
Pediatric Urology Specialist at Siloam ASRI Hospital, Irfan Wahyudi, said that there are several types of genital abnormalities that generally occur in male babies. Abnormalities in the baby’s penis are also not a disgrace and can be cured with medical action.
“Most cases of genital abnormalities do not cause death so they are not revealed, even though this can interfere with a person’s sexual and biological functions if left to adulthood,” said Irfan in a webinar, Friday (4/6).
Here are 5 penis abnormalities in newborns, including hypospadias disorders.
-Fimosis
Phimosis is a penis disorder in which the opening of the urinary tract is covered by the skin of the penis. Irfan said this condition is common in babies and will usually be normal on its own.
But in some cases, phimosis requires medical treatment. Especially if the urinary opening is completely covered by the skin of the penis, making it difficult for the baby to urinate and causing infection.
Usually the doctor will treat phimosis by giving the baby a steroid ointment. If it does not improve, surgery will be performed.
“For parents with babies who have phimosis, don’t forcefully pull the skin so that the urinary opening can be seen. This will hurt the penis and cause scar tissue, even infection,” said Irfan.
-Micropenis
Micropenis is a condition when a man has a penis size that is below normal. Irfan said the cause of micropenis is still not known for certain. But hormonal abnormalities could be a factor.
However, this condition did not happen suddenly. Micropenis can be detected even in newborns.
A normal baby’s penis is usually 2.5 centimeters in size. In infants with a micropenis, it is less than 1.9 centimeters. If left unchecked, the growth of the penis will be hampered and make him insecure when he grows up.
“The treatment can be with hormone therapy since infancy, if it is an adult, reconstruction can be done [pembedahan], “said Irfan.
