Scientists have been baffled about the differences between the two sides of Mars for decades. The northern hemisphere of Mars is very smooth and low. It is one of the flattest and smoothest places in the solar system, potentially created by water that once flowed across the Martian surface.
Meanwhile, the southern part of the Martian surface is very rough and cratered, about 2.5 miles to 5 miles higher than the basins on northern Mars. Recent evidence suggests the large visible difference between the northern and southern parts of the planet is caused by a giant space rock that hit Mars long ago.
