5 meters decides the fate of 41 workers stuck in a collapsed tunnel in India

Indian rescue teams, who are manually digging rubble, are now 5 meters away from 41 workers who have been stuck in a collapsed tunnel for 17 days in the Himalayas.

The Prime Minister of the Indian state of Uttarakhand, Pushkar Singh Dhami, told reporters that a 52-meter rescue corridor had been dug inside the tunnel, and 57 meters were needed. He expected that the rescue operation would be completed soon, without setting a specific time frame, which raises hopes that this marathon operation, which has continued for more than more than one year, will soon end. Two weeks.

However, previous hopes of reaching the stranded men faded following the fall of new rubble and the breakdown of a number of digging mechanisms.

The government has repeatedly warned that timetables are subject to “technical malfunctions, difficult Himalayan terrain, and unexpected emergencies.”

Officials explained last Saturday that the rescue operation would take much longer than previously thought, with rescue workers turning to manual drilling following a breakdown in the drilling machine.

It is noteworthy that the 41 workers have been stuck since November 12 in a tunnel under construction between the towns of Silkiara and Dindelgaon in the state of Uttarakhand, located in the Himalayas.

The rescue plan initially involved pushing a pipe wide enough to pull the trapped men onto wheeled stretchers.

The men receive cooked food through a push tube to ensure a steady supply of essential items.

There are more than 10 doctors, including psychiatrists, on site talking to the workers and monitoring their health. They were also asked to do light yoga exercises, walk around the tunnel space, and continue talking to each other.
