5 Men Escape from Russia, Live at the Airport for Months

Jakarta

A total of five Russians escaped from conscription. They went to neighboring countries and lived in airport months.

Launch CNN, Monday (30/1/2023), five Russian men, who fled the country, evaded a military mobilization order by the government last September. They are stranded at South Korea’s Incheon International Airport.

The five men’s lawyer, Lee Jong-chanereka, said his clients stayed for months at the airport after South Korean authorities refused to accept them. Three had arrived in October, then two more followed in November.

Lee said that the application for refugee status was rejected by the South Korean Ministry of Justice. Hence, now they are stranded in the airport departure area for months while waiting for a decision on their appeal.

“They are given one meal a day, which is lunch. But, for the rest of the day they live on free bread and water,” said Lee.

Men can shower, but must wash clothes by hand and cannot leave the departure area. They have limited access to medical care, but no support for mental health.

“That’s important given their precarious situation. The mobilization of some Russian citizens to fight against Ukraine sparked protests and a mass exodus when it was announced last September,” Lee said.

Many Russian men cross land borders or buy plane tickets abroad at various risks. Collective data shows more than 200,000 people fled Russia for Georgia, Kazakhstan and European Union countries in the first week after the conscription announcement was announced.

It could be that South Korea cannot accept the Russian men because conscription is a sensitive issue in the country of ginseng. Conscription service will apply to all able-bodied males between the ages of 18 and 35.
