iOS 16 brings some great improvements to iMessage.
If available to all users, you have 15 minutes to edit and two minutes to cancel sending messages.

This is especially useful when you misspell a word or send the wrong message to the wrong person.
When editing a message, Apple it will now show a history of edited messages and the user will have up to five opportunities to edit that content.
