5 Interesting Facts About Maya Ghazal, the First Female Syrian Pilot

The name Maya Ghazal has suddenly become a topic of conversation recently. He went viral after being seen with Hollywood actor Tom Cruise.

The official account of The UN Refugee Agency Georgia which accompanies refugees at the crossroads of Europe and Asia uploaded a photo of the two on their Facebook page.

In the uploaded portrait, a woman wearing a hijab can be seen taking a photo with Tom Cruise in a room. In the upload, the account mentions the figure of Maya Ghazal who is a female pilot.

“Maverick pioneered from a pilot … and Tom Cruise. Maya Ghazal is the first Syrian refugee woman to become a pilot. Her message: the sky is for everyone,” read the account statement.

The upload immediately received positive comments from netizens. Many are amazed by the figure of a woman wearing a hijab next to Tom Cruise.

So, who is the viral Maya Ghazal in the photo? Here are 5 interesting facts:

1. Maya Ghazal is a refugee from Syria

Maya Ghazal is the daughter of a simple family. He and his two brothers were born and raised in Damascus, Syria.

At the age of 12, Maya Ghazal had to suffer a sad fate when Syria was battered by civil war. The father was forced to leave the country and go to England to find another job. In 2015, Maya and her family followed her father to flee.

Maya started a new life in Birmingham at the age of 16. Not being able to speak English, he had difficulty getting to school and continuing his interrupted studies.

2. The degree was rejected

When she arrived in England, Maya Ghazal faced various challenges in continuing her education which was lagging behind. His age which is more than 16 years makes it difficult for him to be accepted into any school because he is considered to have completed his education in Syria.

Not only that, she also gets bad stereotypes because of her status as a Syrian woman. According to BBChis school diploma from Syria is not recognized in the UK.

“Maybe it’s because as soon as they find out that I’m from Syria, they think I’m uneducated or came to England illegally. That’s not the case,” Maya told BBC.

“No one wants to listen to my story and this makes me sad. My heart breaks every time I get rejected by the school. I feel useless,” she said.

3. The first female Syrian pilot

Even so, Maya did not give up. Maya, who is one of the millions of people who had to flee Syria, won a degree in Aviation Engineering and Pilot Studies in 2022.

Launch from the official site UNHCR, Maya Ghazal is currently working as a Research Engineer. She is also recognized as the first Syrian female pilot.

The steep and winding road was successfully passed by Maya, Mother. His struggle was not spared from the oblique glances and sneers of the people around him.
