1. Passenger Train Vs Cargo Train
Reported by Reuters, Wednesday (1/3/2023), the trains that collided were trains carrying passengers with goods or cargo trains.
A passenger train traveling from Athens to Thessaloniki collided with a cargo train outside the city of Larissa, central Greece.
At that time the cargo train was running from Thessaloniki towards Larissa. The two trains collided head-to-head.
“The collision was very strong,” the governor of Thessaly region, Konstantinos Agorastos, said in a statement to SKAI TV.
2. Train Derailed
Agorastos said the first four cars on the passenger train series derailed after the collision occurred. The first two carriages, said Agorastos, caught fire after the collision and were almost completely destroyed.
The cause of the collision is not yet clear.
The passenger train was reportedly carrying a total of 350 passengers. About 250 of the passengers have been evacuated and taken to Thessaloniki by buses.
