Jakarta –
Outer space is a space that holds a lot of mysteries that make humans not stop exploring it. In fact, space missions are often used as a competition for several countries, such as the United States, Europe, China, and others.
Technological developments also encourage experts to create tools that make it easier for humans to reach certain objects in outer space. Especially with the formation of US space agencies such as NASA and others, space missions are currently being intensified.
There have been many space missions that have resulted in new discoveries and knowledge for humans. However, do detikers know which space missions are the most historic? Quoting Britannica, here are five of the most important moments in the history of space flight.
1. First Outer Space Satellite Launch
Artificial satellites have the function of monitoring the state of the earth’s surface through orbit in outer space. On October 4, 1957, Sputnik 1 became the first satellite to be launched into space and became the first space flight to be carried out.
The launch of the Russian state-owned satellite marks a milestone in the history of the country’s space missions from simple to sophisticated satellite launches.
2. The First Man in Space
The first human to fly into space was cosmonaut Yury A Gagarin. He carried out the mission of flying the Vostok 1 spacecraft on April 12, 1961. Gagarin took 1 hour and 29 minutes and returned to Earth safely.
3. Landing on the Moon
The world was shocked by the figure of Neil Armstrong, who succeeded in becoming the first human to land on the Moon. Its flight, which was carried out on July 20, 1969 with the Apollo 11 spacecraft, was successfully carried out.
This success became the most important event in space exploration in the 20th century. In fact, the flight, landing and return of the spacecraft to Earth is shown on television and watched by hundreds of millions of people around the world.
4. Launch of the Hubble Space Telescope
The Hubble Telescope is a multi-purpose telescope that was launched in 1990 and is still in operation today. This telescope was launched on April 25, 1990 and became the first largest telescope launched into space.
Although until now the Hubble telescope is still active, but it is old. Therefore, experts have turned to the James Webb Space Telescope, which has greater capabilities because it can detect outer space galaxies that are very far from Earth.
5. First Private Space Flight
In addition to large institutions such as NASA, there is a company called Scaled Composites of Mojave in California which has managed to fly its spacecraft beyond the boundaries of space. The plane was designed by Burt Rutan.
The plane was flown with a South African-born American crew or pilot, Mike Melvil. For his flight, he became an astronaut and the first commercial pilot to fly beyond outer space.
