Supreme Court News: The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended to the Center the names of five judges to be appointed as Chief Justices of the High Courts of Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana, Gauhati, Allahabad and Jharkhand.
Whose name was suggested?
The Collegium has recommended Justice Manindra Mohan Srivastava for appointment as Chief Justice of Rajasthan High Court, Justice Sheel Nagu for Punjab and Haryana High Court, Vijay Bishnoi for Gauhati High Court, Arun Bhansali for Allahabad High Court and Jharkhand High Court. Recommended the name of Justice BR Sarangi.
The Supreme Court Collegium is headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and has Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice BR Gavai as its members. The post of Chief Justice of Rajasthan High Court had become vacant after the elevation of Justice Augustine George Masih to the Supreme Court.
What did the collegium say in the recommendation?
“The Collegium has recommended the appointment of Justice Manindra Mohan Srivastava, the senior-most judge of the Chhattisgarh High Court, as the Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court,” the collegium said in a December 27 resolution.
It said, ‘While considering his name, the Collegium also took into account the fact that Chhattisgarh High Court (which is his parent High Court) has no representation among the Chief Justices of High Courts.’
In the resolution uploaded on Thursday, the collegium said with respect to Justice Nagu that he is considered a competent judge and possesses the high level of integrity and conduct required of a person holding high judicial office.
On Justice Bishnoi, the collegium said that he has maintained high standards of professional ethics at the Bar and the Bench. The collegium said that Justice Bhansali has gained extensive experience in delivering justice in the Rajasthan High Court. With regard to Justice Sarangi, the Collegium cited his contribution to the judiciary through disposal of cases during his tenure of more than 10 years as a High Court judge.
