5 High Cholesterol Foods that are Safe to Consume

Not all foods high in cholesterol are dangerous for consumption.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Cholesterol is identical to the cause of heart disease, but a study shows that cholesterol not the only culprit. In fact, there are many high-cholesterol foods, such as eggs and lobster, that are very healthy to eat regularly.

What you need to watch out for are foods high in saturated fat or trans fat, as these have been shown to increase levels of LDL cholesterol or bad cholesterol in the blood. That can increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. Reported Insider, Monday (6/12), here are five food groups high cholesterol which is safe for consumption.

1. Red meat

Red meat, including beef, lamb, venison, and mutton, is high in cholesterol and saturated fat. For example, 4 ounces of ground beef made from 80 percent lean meat has 80.2 mg of cholesterol and nearly 8 grams of saturated fat.

You can eat red meat as long as it is limited to no more than 70 grams per day. Red meat can provide important nutrients such as iron and zinc.

2. Eggs

One whole egg contains about 207 mg of cholesterol. Saturated fat is 1.61 grams.

“Eggs should be consumed whole, because egg yolks also contain important nutrients such as vitamin D,” says nutritionist Paula Doebrich.

Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium, build strong muscles, maintain a healthy immune system, and prevent neurodegenerative conditions. In addition, egg yolks are naturally high in HDL cholesterol, the good type of cholesterol that transports LDL out of the body.

The American Heart Association recommends eating one or two egg whites per day as part of a balanced diet.
