5 Habits That Trigger Diabetes

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Diabetes is one of the distractions chronic disease suffered the most. This condition occurs when the body is unable to process blood sugar adequately.

It can damage blood vessels throughout the body, potentially causing heart disease, stroke, blindness, and amputation.

However, diabetes generally does not develop overnight. A number of habits, including a consumptive lifestyle and minimal physical activity are suspected to be the trigger for developing diabetes.

Here are the daily habits that cause diabetes.

1. Consumption of sweet drinks

“One of the most common unhealthy habits is drinking soda to quench your thirst when all you need is water,” said Thomas Horowitz, a family medicine specialist at CHA Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center in Los Angeles. Eat This, Not That!.

Horowitz says that the sugar content of sugary drinks like soda, bottled tea, and others can be very high.

Kathleen Wyne, an endocrinologist who treats diabetes patients at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, agrees.

“For many people, stopping sugary sodas leads to rapid 20 pounds (9 kilograms) of weight loss,” she says.

2. Eat too much sugar

“Diabetes is when your body can’t provide enough insulin to allow glucose (sugar) to enter your body’s hungry cells,” says Horowitz.

According to him, the best way to avoid it is to go on a diet that does not overload your insulin supply.

Horowitz then recommends choosing foods that break down slowly or have limited sugars—for example, protein, whole grains, and vegetables.
