As many as five asteroids of different sizes are approaching Earth in the first days of the new year, scientists at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory warn. One of them, discovered on January 1, turned out to be a real giant – its size is comparable to two football fields.

Asteroids that approach the planet closer than 7.5 million km and have a size of more than 150 meters are considered potentially dangerous for the Earth. This list included several space rocks, two of which were only spotted on January 1 of this year.
Who are they and when to expect:
2024 AA (11 meters): It is already close to the Earth, but at a safe distance – 610 thousand km, which is twice as far as the Moon.
2023 YR (37 meters): This asteroid, discovered last year, will approach us at a distance of 1,730,000 km.
2019 KK5 (94 meters): Discovered 5 years ago, this space guest will fly at a safe distance of 4,070,000 km.
2024 AC (26 meters): The new asteroid, spotted on January 1 this year, will fly up on January 6 at a distance of 2,310,000 km, which is comparable to the length of a passenger airliner.
2002 AY1 (219 meters): The largest of all – its size is comparable to two football fields. However, its flight is scheduled to a safe distance of 5,800,000 km on January 8.
Scientists assure that according to current data, none of these asteroids pose a threat to Earth. Monitoring of them continues, excluding possible risks in the future. The Universe continues to delight us with its secrets and riddles.
