Didier Deschamps seems to have not gone through bankruptcy French become champion World Cup 2022. The 54-year-old said there were five players who didn’t perform as expected in the final match against Argentina.
In that game, France trailed by two goals in the first half with a Lionel Messi penalty and a counter-attack leading to Angel Di Maria’s goal. France only rallied in the second half when Kylian Mbappe scored two goals in two minutes.
France eventually lost 2-4 on penalties after a 3-3 draw for 120 minutes. Messi and Mbappe added goals for each country in extra time.
In this match, France were criticized for playing poorly in the first and second half. Les Bleus is considered late heat and is fatal. Regarding this issue, Deschamps thinks it was caused by five players playing below standard.
“We failed to fulfill our duties. I will not name scapegoats as the cause. But there are five starters in the starting lineup who, for various reasons, did not play up to such an important match,” Deschamps said, quoted by Marca .
“I’m not saying bad, but we were lost for an hour. We managed to come back, but we did what we had to because there were times when the match went one way,” he explained.
Deschamps didn’t name names, but France recovered to equal Argentina after only making four substitutions, two of which came in the first half, namely Olivier Giroud and Ousmane Dembele.
Deschamps has just renewed his contract as manager of Les Bleus, which will keep him until 2026.
