5 Facts of Serious Floods Landa Malaysia to Fall Victims

Major floods occurred in Malaysia with three people killed and 35 thousand people displaced. Following are the facts related to the severe flood.

This flood occurred on Wednesday (1/3), Johor became the area with the most severe flood conditions. Johor Chief Minister Onn Hafiz Ghazi convened an emergency meeting with all agencies on Wednesday (1/3) evening, following a “critical flood situation” in the state. It was also stated that the meeting discussed the flood situation in Segamat, specifically in Chaah, Sweetener, Calm and Labis.

“I have asked related institutions to take care of the logistics for sending tents and distributing (ready-to-eat) food to the affected areas,” said Onn Hafiz in a statement via Facebook after attending the emergency meeting.

Here are the facts regarding severe flooding in Malaysia:

1) Overflowing River

On Thursday (2/3) at 11.00 local time, the Department of Drainage and Irrigation (DID) stated that the water level in at least 16 rivers in the Johor region had exceeded the danger level.

Two of these rivers, namely the Lenik River and the Gemas River, which are in the Segamat district are reported to have the highest water levels, namely 2.5 meters and 1.96 meters so far.

2) Annual Phenomenon

Floods are said to be an annual phenomenon in Malaysia which is triggered by the northeastern monsoon which brings torrential rains from November to March.

Three months ago, several states, including Johor, were also hit by severe flooding. It was reported that more than 70,000 residents were displaced by the floods.

3) 3 People Killed

The death toll from flooding in the country has risen to three. On Wednesday (1/3) a man died in Johor after his car was swept away by a flood.

According to the latest data, two elderly people died today after being trapped in their house in Segamat, Johor.

Segamat district police chief AKBP Ahmad Zamry Marinsah said the bodies of a man and woman in their 70s were found around 11:00 a.m. on Thursday (2/3) by officers monitoring the area after the flood receded.

Malaysian news agency Bernama reported that the two victims lived alone and the water level in their house was up to the roof.
