KOMPAS.com – A planet dubbed “Earth’s cousin” has just been discovered at a distance of 490 light years from Earth.
The planet is named Kepler-186F. It is the first Earth-sized planet to be found in the habitable zone of its star.
Only about 10 percent larger than Earth, Kepler-186F is the closest planet to Earth in size ever found in its star’s habitable zone.
Reported from Space, Here are 5 facts about Planet Kepler-186F:
1. The Kepler-186F is an invention that made history
Kepler-186F is the first Earth-sized alien planet to be discovered in the habitable zone of its star.

This means the planet, which is only slightly larger than Earth, is in a part of its star system where liquid water can exist on the planet’s surface.
Astronomers have found other planets in their star’s habitable zone, but a planet the size of Kepler 186-F is the first time it has been discovered in its star’s habitable zone.
“This is the historic discovery of the first Earth-sized planet to be found in the habitable zone around its star,” said astronomer Geoff Marcy of the University of California, Berkeley.
The scientists found Planet Kepler-186F in data collected by NASA’s Kepler space telescope.
2. Planet Kepler-186F may be habitable
Because Kepler-186F’s location is in the habitable zone around its star, this planet may be a place where life can thrive.
