A distended stomach is not always due to pregnancy, Mother. The stomach can be distended due to fat or there are ovarian cysts. So what’s the difference between stomach cysts and pregnancy?

Before knowing the difference, let’s know what a cyst is. Some women of childbearing age have ovarian cysts. Luckily most of these ovarian cysts are harmless, Mother.

The difference between stomach cysts and pregnancy

So this ovarian cyst is a fluid-filled bag that is located in the ovary. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), most ovarian cysts are benign (not cancerous) and go away on their own without treatment.

Launch page healthline, Dr. Yamini Ranchod, Epidemiologist, said that there are many types of cysts with various causes. Doctors sometimes recognize cysts during a physical exam, but often also rely on diagnostic imaging.

Diagnostic images help doctors find out what’s inside the lump. These types of imaging include ultrasounds, CT scans, MRI scans, and mammograms.

“Cysts that look smooth, both visually and on diagnostic imaging, are almost always benign. If a lump has a solid component, because the tissue is not fluid or air, it may be benign or malignant,” says Ranchad.

Most cysts do not cause symptoms, but some ovarian cysts do cause symptoms Whattoexpect:

  1. Lower abdominal pain or pelvic area on the side where the cyst is
Such ovarian cyst pain can be sharp or dull. It feels like a sting that comes and goes. In rare cases, an ovarian cyst can cause the ovary to twist (called ovarian torsion). This can be very painful, and requires emergency surgery to dislodge the ovary.
  2. Flatulence
  3. Abdominal pressure
  4. Irregular menstruation
  5. Pain when defecating
  6. Nausea, vomiting, or breast tenderness
  7. Frequent or difficult urination

These symptoms are similar to the symptoms of ovarian cancer. If you experience any of these symptoms for more than 12 days, see your doctor immediately.

Diagnosing ovarian cysts

Most ovarian cysts are benign, but it’s important to get them checked to rule out cancer. It is especially important for postmenopausal women to be screened because of their high risk of developing ovarian cancer.

The doctor may first detect an ovarian cyst during a routine pelvic exam. Then the doctor can use several tests to determine the type, size, and composition of the cyst (contents).

Cysts filled with fluid tend to become cancerous. Solid or filled with liquid and solids can indicate cancer.

Treatment of ovarian cysts

Most ovarian cysts go away on their own and don’t require any treatment. In rarer cases, such as in cases of ruptured ovarian cysts or ovarian torsion, the following treatments may be needed:

  • Rest
  • Pain medication
  • Operation
