Dr Archana Batra, a Certified Dietitian, Physiotherapist and Diabetes Educator who debunks some of the myths and mistrust surrounding diabetes among common people. Here’s what you need to know for a better and healthier lifestyle.
1. Starchy foods should be avoided
Starchy foods, also known as carbohydrate foods like wheat, rice, bread, cereals, are a major part of a person’s balanced diet. They are a major source of energizing components and should not be avoided altogether.
However, because starch breaks down into glucose which is also a source of energy for the body, it is important to know the right amount of carbohydrates needed by your body.
2. After diabetes, you do not have to change your diet plan. Only pills and drugs can work!
There are two types of diabetes, type-2 diabetes is a cumulative disease that continues to increase over time, if left untreated. When diagnosed with Diabetes, the pancreas in your body is still producing a certain amount of insulin.
But if you don’t change your eating habits and diet plan according to the disease, the pancreas will probably stop doing it soon and you will only depend on pills and insulin shots.
Therefore, it is necessary to change and adopt healthy eating habits and diet plans in consultation with a nutritionist according to your health condition.
You can consume alcohol but the key is to keep it under the limit. It is always advised not to be a regular consumer of alcohol and have alcohol free days in your diet plan.
This is because alcoholic beverages add a lot of calories to your diet and also serve as an appetite stimulator which makes it difficult for you to stick to your healthy diet plan.
4. You are more likely to get the disease if you are diabetic
Being diabetic does not make you more susceptible to disease. However, the management of blood glucose levels is altered in diabetes which can increase the severity of the disease or infection that has been caused.
It depends on the health condition and the severity of diabetes as well. Hence, it is necessary to follow a healthy lifestyle as well as preventative measures to prevent infections and diseases.
5. Natural products and supplements can cure diabetes
Medically, there is no right drug to treat diabetes completely. Therefore, any product claim that says it can cure diabetes is wrong. Many natural products or supplements can reduce some of the effects of diabetes, but none can cure them.
It is also said that at times, these products may interact with diabetes medications and block their effects, leading to further complications in diabetes risk. So, always consult your doctor before taking any medication or taking any medication.
