Strategic port city UkraineMariupol is under a “blockade” of forces Russia after days of attacks. Its mayor, Vadim Boychenko, said the city had been violently attacked.
“For five days, our hometown, our family of half a million people, has been viciously attacked,” he wrote in a message posted to the mayor’s Telegram account, the news agency reported. AFPSaturday (5/3/2022).
Located on the Sea of Azov, the city of 450,000 people has been battered by the military Russiaand electricity or water is cut off in the city.
“For now, we are looking for a solution to the humanitarian problem and all possible ways to get Mariupol out of the blockade,” Boychenko said in his message.
“Our priority is establishing a ceasefire so we can restore vital infrastructure and establish humanitarian corridors to bring food and medicine into the city,” he added.
Mastering Mariupol will provide strategic advantages for Russian invasionbecause it could link it with Russian troops coming from Russia’s annexed Crimea as well as troops in the Donbas.
Earlier this week, the mayor of Mariupol accused Russian forces of destroying bridges and trains to prevent residents from leaving.
