5 Dangerous Foods for Children Under 4: Choking Hazards and Health Risks

It seems like just food and maybe it is, but you better be careful with it if you have children under 4 years old. It is better to only give them these innocent things when they are older.

And that has everything to do with the risk of choking.

You always think: that won’t happen to me. But danger sometimes lurks just around the corner.

Things your child should not eat

Therefore, pay attention to these 3 things:

1. Nuts, peanuts, snacks

Due to choking hazards, whole nuts and peanuts are often not recommended for children under 4 years of age. It is recommended to cut nuts and peanuts into small pieces or process them into nut butter to reduce the risk of choking.

2. Chewing gum

It may seem fine because children from the age of 2 can certainly chew well, but it is still better not to give it to your toddler. Chewing gum can be a choking hazard for young children. It is often not introduced until children are old enough to use it safely and understand not to swallow it.

3. Raw fish, cheese or raw meat

Sushi may be a fun snack for the whole family, but your toddler should not eat raw fish yet. The same applies to raw meat, such as carpaccio or filet americain. These may contain harmful bacteria, to which young children are more sensitive. Also do not give cheese made from raw milk. This may contain bacteria such as campylobacter, listeria, salmonella and E.coli. These bacteria can cause a food infection. Young children up to the age of 4 often have reduced resistance and are more susceptible to food infections.

4. Zachtgekookt no

An egg that is boiled too soft can also be dangerous for young children because of the bacteria it may contain. Salmonella can occur in raw or undercooked eggs and can cause serious food poisoning.

5. Spread sausage

It is better not to give children up to 4 years old too often on bread or a cracker. This contains a lot vitamine A. Too much of it can be harmful to children. For example, too much intake can lead to headache, nausea, dizziness and fatigue.
