5 Capavenir classes closed after the discovery of two cases of the South African variant

The second case was too many. This Sunday, the municipality of Capavenir-Vosges, in conjunction with the prefecture and National Education, decided to close five of the ten classes of the Gohypré primary school. Because two of the students of this school have been declared positive for the South African variant of Covid-19.

“The first case was reported on Friday in a CM2 class,” explains Cédric Haxaire, the mayor of the town. According to the new health protocol in force in the schools, the CM2 class was therefore closed the same day. But Sunday, the announcement of a second case, this time in a CP / CE1 class, immediately raised the alert cursor.

“We had to react immediately”

“With the presence of many contact cases, it was necessary to react immediately”, indicates the mayor. Who therefore opted for the closure of five of the classes. The students of these will not resume classes this Monday morning as usual.

How long will this closure last? Will the whole school close? The answers to these questions should be partly provided this Monday morning after the crisis meeting which will be held at 8 am in town hall with elected officials, the director of the school and representatives of National Education. “I have already asked the National Education and the prefecture to set up a massive screening campaign as quickly as possible, both for children in all schools and for the entire population. “

The South African variant of Covid-19 is indeed presented as much more contagious than the usual strain. This is also why health protocols have been modified in recent weeks. “The government wants to do its utmost not to close schools, but we cannot put an entire population at risk either,” comments Cédric Haxaire.
