Jakarta, CNN Indonesia –
Lemon water believed to have many benefits for health. However, consuming too much lemon water is claimed to cause several problems.
Recently, lemon water has become a trend in itself in the world of health. The antioxidant content and a series of vitamins contained in lemon are believed to keep the body healthy, one of which is by boosting the immune system.
Quoting Times of India, Lemon water is most effective when consumed in the morning. It is recommended to mix lemon juice with warm water which can help extract vitamin C and polyphenols from it.
Nutritionist Anju Sood recommends consuming just two lemons that are squeezed and mixed with water in a day. That amount is enough to keep you hydrated.
However, like many other foods and drinks, if consumed in excess, lemon water can trigger several health problems.
Here are the dangers of consuming too much lemon water, to quote Insider.
1. Damaging teeth
Lemon is very acidic. If consumed too often, the American Dental Association notes, the acidity in lemons can slowly erode your tooth enamel.
To deal with excess acid exposure on your teeth, you can try drinking lemon water by using a straw. You are also advised not to brush your teeth immediately after consuming lemon water and drink lots of water.
2. Trigger stomach pain
Lemon water is known to be beneficial for intestinal health and the entire digestive system. However, instead of being healthy, too much lemon juice can actually worsen some digestive disorders like GERD and acid reflux.
Some acidic foods such as lemon can trigger GERD and acid reflux by causing heartburn, nausea, and vomiting.
3. Exposed to germs from lemon peel
Many people consume lemon water by infused water or by dipping a lemon slice in water in a bottle. However, this method risks triggering various diseases caused by bacteria on the lemon peel.
A study published in Journal of Environmental Health found, many lemons contain microorganisms, including some of the disease-causing bacteria found in lemon peels.
To minimize the risk, just use lemon juice and mix it with warm water.
4. Make canker sores worse
Canker sores will be more annoying and cause a burning sensation if you are exposed to too much lemon juice. The American Dental Association says this is caused by the acid in the lemon being too high.
5. Causes migraines
Several studies have found an association between migraines and consumption of citrus fruits, one of which is lemon.
Some neuroscientists say fruits like lemons are known to trigger migraines and headaches. This is caused by levels tyramine high in lemon. Tyramine itself is a natural compound that is often associated with headaches.
