5 asteroids that NASA is tracking have the potential to hit Earth

MerahPutih.com – Asteroids now pass Earth continuously. In fact, some of them have hit the Earth directly. Fortunately, these asteroids are too small to pose a serious threat and burn up in the atmosphere.

However, the last large asteroid that hit the Earth was 66 million years ago, wiping out most of the dinosaurs. The chances of a similar event happening again are slim, but NASA and other space agencies are taking no chances.

Experts monitor the area for potential threats. Then, there are efforts to plan ahead if a large asteroid comes directly to Earth, such as hitting it to divert its path.

The most important thing to note is that everything is still considered zero risk at this time.

1. MUSICIAN

Bennu is the most disturbing asteroid as far as we know at the moment. Because of that, the asteroid has the greatest risk of hitting the Earth.

If the worst were to happen, it would not happen for more than 150 years. Currently, Bennu has a 1 in 2,700 chance of hitting Earth on September 24, 2182.

Weighing 74 million tons and 0.30 miles wide, Bennu will not destroy the entire world. However, if it hits a densely populated area, the asteroid could cause millions of casualties, with the energy equivalent to dropping 1.4 billion tons of explosives, according to Living science.

NASA has also taken samples from Bennu, which were handed over to scientists in September 2023.

2. 29075 (1950 AD)

Asteroid 29075 (1950 AD) is probably the second most dangerous asteroid. However, it will be one of the deadliest.

With a width of 0.81 miles and a mass of 78 million tons, this asteroid has the power to destroy humanity. The reported energy is equivalent to 75 billion tons of TNT. In fact, there is a 1 in 34,500 chance that 29075 (1950 AD) will hit Earth on March 16, 2880.

3. 2023 TL4

2023 TL4 is 0.2 miles wide and has a mass of 47 million tons, which means it would be like dropping 7.5 billion tons of TNT on Earth. Currently, there is a 1 in 181,000 chance of hitting Earth. According to estimates, that will not happen until October 10, 2119.

4. 2007 FT3

The most important concern about the possibility of FT3 hitting Earth in 2007 is that it could happen in our lifetime.

However, NASA has denied previous reports that 2007 FT3 could hit Earth on October 5 this year, but there is another possibility on March 3, 2030.

However, the chances are very definite, that is 1 in 11.5 million. Measuring 0.21 miles wide and weighing 54 million tons, the FT3 in 2007 would explode 2.6 billion tons of TNT, enough to cause regional damage.

5. 1979 XB

1979 XB is a missing asteroid that was last seen in 1979. Therefore, understanding of this asteroid appears to be rather limited. This asteroid is estimated to be about 0.41 miles wide and has a mass of 390 million tons.

Scientists believe that the chance of hitting Earth occurs on December 14, 2113 or about 1 in 1.8 million. If it hit the Earth, this would be equivalent to 30 billion tons of TNT. (soft)
