The Eternal Universe
Before the Big Bang theory was developed, the prevailing consensus among scientists was that the universe was just what it was. And it will always be so since then until now. Sure, there may have been some creation event at some point in the distant past if you have religious beliefs, but creation is the universe that looks and acts as it does in the present.
Of course, the occasional star explodes and comets randomly appear, but overall, the universe is. It is one of those great cosmic tapestries that, at least on a grand scale, remains forever unchanged.
All of that was refuted when astronomer Edwin Hubble discovered the expansion of the universe. The discovery immediately ruled out the idea of an eternal universe. For, in the expanding cosmos, the universe was clearly different in the past than it is in the present, and the future will be even more different.
