“5.0 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Mugla Province in Turkey: No Casualties Reported”

A 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck southwestern Turkey’s southwestern Mugla province late Wednesday, according to a statement from the Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (AFAD).

The earthquake occurred at 23:00 local time, at a depth of 54 km, off the coast of the Datca peninsula in the Aegean Sea, the statement said.

The nearby resorts of Bodrum and Marmaris felt the strong tremor. The earthquake caused temporary panic and fear among the people in these areas.

The nearby Greek islands of Rhodes and Kos also felt it. There are no reports of casualties, injuries or significant material damage after the earthquake.

Turkey is among the most seismically active areas in the world, as it is located on several active fault lines.

Most potentially dangerous is the North Anatolian Fault, the meeting point of the Anatolian and Eurasian tectonic plates near Istanbul. Disaster preparedness, as well as the Turkish government’s efforts at “urban transformation,” or the renovation of old and dilapidated buildings, remain two vital options for disaster protection.

Over 50,500 people lost their lives after two major earthquakes hit southeastern Turkey on February 6 this year.

About 14 million people in Turkey were affected by the earthquakes, as were many others in northern Syria.
