49ers Will Face Cardinals Seeking To Close Year Good

Arsenio garate

The San Francisco 49ers were already out of playoff contention last week after the loss to the Dallas Cowboys. Even so, the 49ers will look to close the year well, starting with their second divisional meeting against the Arizona Cardinals who are still in the fight to get a ticket to the postseason.

It has been quite an even fight on the part of the teams seeking that seventh place in the NFC. This year the NFL expanded the postseason to include seven teams from each conference by adding two extra spots in wild card week, Arizona currently occupies that spot and if it were to win this week 16 divisional matchup, it would already secure its position in qualify for the playoffs for the first time in five years. However, San Francisco has a chance to rob them of hope with a victory and to accommodate other NFC games, if the Chicago Bears win and Arizona lose, it could completely shake the whole picture of that seventh ticket in the NFC.

This will be a rather peculiar game, since it is not at all usual for two “local” teams to play at home at the same time, although San Francisco is the visiting team this week 16, State Farm Stadium has been the home of the 49ers for the last weeks and will continue to be the next week. This is certainly something different, since the 49ers will play as a visitor being “local” but not really being it.

The first meeting of these two teams which was in Week 1, Arizona put more than 400 yards on offense and against a healthy defense of San Francisco. Fifteen weeks later, they had Richard Sherman again this week along with Jimmie Ward and Javon Kinlaw on the disabled list for the 49er defense, and there’s a strong chance they will miss Saturday’s game. San Francisco will have to rely on backups to stop Murray and the Cardinals.

After an injury to quarterback Nick Mullens last week, CJ Beathard will have his first start as a starter with San Francisco since week 8 of the 2018 season, which was precisely in a game on the road and nothing more and nothing less than against the Cardinals. In that meeting Beathard was limited, but without a doubt he will go out on the court wanting to remove that bad memory and show why he was not before the third quarterback on the list.
