49ers triumph in Aaron Rodgers’ return to the Jets

California. Aaron Rodgers’ long-awaited return to the field was spoiled by San Francisco. The 49ers got 147 rushing yards and a touchdown from backup running back Jordan Mason to beat the star quarterback’s New York Jets 32-19 on Monday night.

Rodgers threw for 167 yards and a touchdown and also had an interception exactly 52 weeks to the day after his New York debut ended with a torn Achilles tendon four plays into the game.

Although he struggled to move around the control box, the 40-year-old showed off the arm that helped him win four MVPs with the Green Bay Packers in his first full appearance with the Jets. That, however, wasn’t enough to beat the 49ers, who dominated New York in the trenches and overcame the absence of All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey.

Mason, who went undrafted in 2022, made up for it in his first career start by using his physical running style to help San Francisco control the ball behind a solid performance from the offensive line.

Deebo Samuel added a 2-yard touchdown run while Jake Moody made a franchise-record six field goals. Brock Purdy, meanwhile, threw for 231 yards with no touchdowns and no turnovers against a Jets defense that generated little pressure without edge defender Haason Reddick.

The Niners took control of the game near halftime and thus capped their first win.
