The unacceptable present situation cannot be the future” – Announcement of the Presidency of the Republic on the black anniversary of the second Turkish invasion – “The desire for liberation, reunification and return undiminished”
Today marks 49 years since the completion of the crime against Cyprus, a day of commemoration and condemnation of the barbaric Turkish invasion.
As stated in an announcement by the Presidency of the Republic, as of today, on August 14, 1974Turkey with Attila 2 and while diplomatic talks were taking place in Geneva, she proceeded to execute her plan by occupying the city of Famagusta, Morphou and other areas, expanding the occupation and bringing more destruction, a new wave of refugees, spreading death and creating more missing persons.
The new advance of Turkish troops was condemned by the UN Security Council which met on August 15 and 16, calling for a ceasefire and the immediate withdrawal of Turkish troops from Cyprus.
In the years that followed, the Security Council adopted resolutions 550 and 789 on Famagusta, which today are as relevant as ever.
After 49 years, the longing for release, reunion and return remains unquenchable.
The unacceptable current state of affairs cannot be the future of Cyprus and its people. For this the only path on which the President of the Republic remains exclusively committed is that of removing the impasse and resuming the talks from where they left off in Crans Montana, on the basis of UN resolutions, EU principles and values and the acquis of the talks.
Within this context, the President of the Republic will intensify efforts even more that it pays at all levels, in the UN, the EU and at the international level more broadly, so that the initiative it has undertaken for breaking the deadlock and for the resumption of talks, with more active involvement of the EU, always under the auspices of the UN, to have a positive result.
