In Nigeria, 49 women abducted by Boko Haram earlier this week have been released. According to two of the victims and a local leader, a ransom was paid by a government official.
The women were taken from a village near the town of Maiduguri, in the northeastern state of Borno, on Tuesday. Boko Haram Islamists demanded a ransom of 3 million naira ($3,600).
At the end of July, Islamists beheaded at least ten farmers in Borno. The state is a hotbed of insurgents and the center of Nigeria’s 14-year war on terror. The conflict has since spread to neighboring Chad, Niger and Cameroon.
According to residents, members of the terror organization are killing and kidnapping farmers in the predominantly agricultural region, disrupting farming villages. The unrest could lead to a rise in food prices on top of the country’s high inflation.
In other parts of Nigeria, residents also face violence from armed militias. An attack by such a militia in the northwest of the country killed 25 Nigerian soldiers last week.
