/Pogled.info/ NASA named the probable date of the end of the world, which, according to this version, is not far not only by astronomical, but also by human standards. American astronomers also named the specific cause of a possible planetary catastrophe. What do their Russian colleagues think about it?
NASA specialists have discovered an asteroid that could collide with Earth in 23 years, and the crash could happen on Valentine’s Day – February 14, 2046.
The object, designated 2023 DW, was discovered on February 26, according to the European Astronomical Agency. This asteroid, about 50 meters in size, is at the top of the list of space objects that can potentially affect our planet.
It is currently located at a distance of about 0.12 AU from Earth. One astronomical unit is equal to the average distance between the Earth and the Sun. NASA believes that the possibility of a collision between the Earth and a space object is not the most likely, but does not rule out the worst-case scenario for the planet.
About how Russian colleagues look at NASA’s apocalyptic forecast, REGNUM news agency spoke with Vladimir Surdin, a researcher at the State Astronomical Institute named after PK Sternberg.
REGNUM: Vladimir Georgievich, is it time for humanity to panic? Some publications write that an asteroid the size of the Leaning Tower of Pisa will collide with Earth.
Vladimir Surdin: No, why. As a rule, the orbit will be refined over time and it will turn out to fly past the Earth. This happens 90% of the time.
REGNUM: Does Russia have systems to track such asteroids?
VS : Russia has its own search systems, but the Americans have stronger systems. These are several robotic telescopes that continuously scan the sky. We also have robotic telescopes, but of a slightly smaller caliber. They complement each other. No competition here. So far, astronomers around the world do not have the ability to monitor the entire sky. For now, there is no such possibility.
But overall, the Leaning Tower of Pisa comparison doesn’t look very professional.
49.2 meters is a big thing. Almost three times larger than Chelyabinsk. So, that means 30 times more weight. This is serious.
But we still have to find out how believable this message is.
REGNUM: If we allow an asteroid to collide with Earth, the consequences depend on where exactly it happens – at sea or on land?
VS: With a probability of 65% it will “land” in the ocean. This is a more unpleasant event than landfall. If this happens on land, then it will go into the ground, there will be a fairly powerful explosion. But this will be a local problem. And when it falls into the ocean, tsunamis are born, and the shores of this ocean will be flooded with a serious wave, and people live on the shores, as you know. They don’t live in deserts, they don’t live in the taiga, the main mass of the population lives on the coasts. So, a tsunami is a pretty nasty thing.
REGNUM: Shouldn’t a great amount of dust be raised from the fall on land to cover the Sun?
VS: Not from an asteroid that size. A kilometer or three kilometers – yes. A hundred meters is not big enough.
REGNUM: When was the last time objects of this size fell to Earth?
VS: In 1908, the Tunguska meteorite fell. It was about 70 meters. It exploded in the air, but the problem was serious. Almost 2,000 square kilometers of taiga were destroyed by this explosion.
REGNUM: If it turns out that a collision with such an object is inevitable, then can the technological capabilities of humanity prevent this asteroid from falling to Earth?
VS: No.
REGNUM: And rockets? Or bombs?
VS: No, no, it’s useless. At this size. By dividing it into several parts, we will only increase the area of u200bu200bdamage.
REGNUM : Shouldn’t the fragments burn up in the atmosphere?
VS .: If we destroy it to dust, then yes, they will burn. But you can’t brush it off. And so it will break into several dozen pieces, for which we will not know where they will fall. And if the exact place of the fall is known, then some sort of evacuation can be organized. And that drop location can be predicted quite accurately. But with a bunch of separate fragments – it will be a nightmare.
