A 48-year-old man from Zoetermeer has been arrested because he is associated by the police with three speakers that were found in containers in recent days. Baby crying could be heard through the speakers. Passers-by then called the police.
Two speakers were found in Zoetermeer on Friday afternoon and yesterday morning. The third was discovered on Friday in Rozenburg, not far from Rotterdam. The speakers were remote controlled and wrapped in a garbage bag.
Motive unclear
It is still unclear why the man threw the speakers into the container. He is being questioned by the police. The man has been identified on the basis of the three reports, witness statements and the seized speakers.
The police suspect that the man was confused and needs help, but also emphasize that the deployment of emergency services must be handled with care. “Searching the containers has cost an unnecessary amount of valuable time and that is not without risks. Rescuers cannot be everywhere at once.”
