48 trillion won for cancellation, 25 trillion won for the opening without spectators… Will the Tokyo Olympics be held?

[이데일리 남궁민관 기자] With the new coronavirus infectious disease (Corona 19) continuing around the world, the theory of canceling the opening of the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympic Games in Japan, which is approaching six months in the future, has been raised again. Under the prospect that Japan’s economic loss would reach 50 trillion won if it was canceled at all, the Japanese government reviewed such a cancellation theory as well as the’no-audience contest’ plan and repeatedly confirmed its will.

On the 23rd, according to the British and Japanese foreign press, the British newspaper The Times reported on the 21st (local time) that the Japanese government has internally concluded to cancel the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympic Games held in July this year due to the corona 19 incident. On the 22nd, “the Japanese government is now uniting and preparing for the success of the tournament” and denied this.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC), along with the Japanese government, denied such revocation. In this regard, the British daily Telegraph reported on the 22nd (local time) that the IOC planned to get the Corona 19 vaccine to all the athletes participating in the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympic Games.

In particular, it is known that the Japanese government is considering considering the’non-audience competition’ as one option for the opening of the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Mainichi Newspaper reported on the 23rd that the Japanese government is reviewing three measures: △No upper limit △50% reduction △No spectators, as to whether or not to accommodate the stadium crowd.

This is because if the Japanese government completely cancels the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympic Games, the economic loss that Japan will bear is enormous. Earlier, Katsuhiro Miyamoto, emeritus professor of the Faculty of Economics at Osaka University, predicted that if the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympic Games were canceled in March last year, the economic loss that Japan would suffer would amount to 4,5151 billion yen (about 48 trillion KRW). Professor Miyamoto said that if the tournament was held without a spectator, it could be reduced to 2,433 trillion yen (about 25.700 trillion won), which is half the amount, but huge economic losses are inevitable.

Meanwhile, the Japanese government has decided to postpone it for one year in consideration of the Corona 19 incident in March last year, four months before the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games were held.
