A group of social and popular organizations began a strike on Tuesday for 48 hours in San Francisco from Macorís, Duarte province, demanding a set of social demands.
During the first hours of the day the streets of the city looked desolate and most businesses with their doors closed.
In the popular sectors, debris was observed obstructing the passage of vehicles and waste from burning tires.
While agents of the National Police and members of the Army of the Dominican Republic patrolled through the downtown part of the city.
Demands
The conveners demand the construction of streets, sidewalks and curbs in the neighborhoods and urbanizations. Agrarian settlement for peasants, construction of the culture square, relocation of families from the Blue neighborhood and complementary works of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD).
They also request the construction of the sewage system and the highway San Francisco of Macorís-Río San Juan, that the ARS be eliminated, lower fuel prices and exclude the rice sector from free trade agreements.
