In La Tronche in Isère, almost all caregivers in the pediatric center are in burnout. This Monday, nine nurses in the pediatric emergency room have been on sick leave for a week. As a result, operations planned for the next few weeks will have to be deprogrammed.
In the pediatric block, only one nurse is still on duty. The cause of these multiple sick leaves, a frantic pace of work explains Marie, one of the nurses.
“We are exhausted. We run the block seven days a week and 24 hours a day with a small workforce”, she explains.
A situation that has been going on for several months now. “We had meetings several times to raise awareness about our state of exhaustion and we weren’t listened to so we decided to listen to ourselves. It’s very guilty vis-à-vis the children who had to be operated on,” she says.
Temporary workers soon to be recruited
Because in total, more than 460 operations could be deprogrammed in the coming weeks. Marie and the other nurses in the service ask that their team be reinforced.
“Normally, it takes 18 block nurses for this specialty in pediatrics and it’s been several months since they were only 11”, denounces Elizabeth Guillemin is the deputy secretary of the CGT of the CHU of Grenoble.
Urgent interventions remain assured supports the management of the CHU. To keep the pediatric emergency operating room open, nurses from the adult room will be called in as reinforcements and temporary workers will be recruited.
