A 47-year-old UK woman – who yawns excessively – has discovered she suffers from a rare neurodegenerative condition. She initially thought she was just very tired, the Mirror reports.
Nickie Davies, from West Kirby, Merseyside, admitted she had Covid last January and believed the exhaustion was a consequence of the virus. 10 days after contracting Covid, Nickie began to cast continuously, even “100 times a day”.
She said she “knew something was wrong” and went to her family doctor, who thought her symptoms were related to sleep apnea. Nickie was referred to an ENT doctor who in turn thought she might have an allergy.
The woman suspected that her symptoms were due to motor neurone disease (a rare neurodegenerative condition that affects the brain and nerves, causing increasing weakness over time), but doctors initially assured her that this was not the case. In March, she thought she was dealing with a functional neurological disorder — a problem with the way the brain communicates with the body.
However, in July, Nickie’s worst fears were confirmed. She was diagnosed with motor neurone disease.
“I felt like I had to go, I couldn’t stay, I felt claustrophobic because my worst fears had come true. The nurses took me to another room, but I just couldn’t understand anything they were saying,” she said.
Nickie admitted she cried for two weeks just thinking about her diagnosis and how affected her loved ones would be, especially her 16-year-old daughter.
“It made me understand that nothing matters if you’re healthy. I couldn’t even talk about it or mention MND without crying. It got to a point where I thought I could sit and cry and feel sad or I could pick myself up and move on and that’s the path I chose,” Nickie also confessed.
She said the illness affected her speech and she had to take time off from work.
