From the start of the Covid-19 health crisis, medical students responded to the call from the National InterSyndicale des Internes (ISNI) and demonstrated their solidarity. They did not count their hours and did not hesitate to carry out various and varied tasks: answering families’ questions, providing psychological support to the sick, carrying out first aid, doing administration… They are today today psychologically exhausted.
“47.1% of interns show symptoms of anxiety; 18.4% of depressive symptoms, 29.8% declare to show signs of post-traumatic stress ”, worries the InterSyndicale Nationale des Internes which interviewed 892 students at the end of the cycle, all specialties combined, between March 20 and May 11. Nightmares, traumatic memories, feelings of not being able to cope, not being able to talk about it, irritability, anger, anxiety, sadness … are all symptoms that overwhelm these young professionals.
Overwork
These results were compared to a similar study carried out in 2017, excluding the coronavirus crisis. The increase in these disorders is edifying. 62.2% of general medicine residents said they were anxious in 2017, today they are 76.5%. They were 52.4% in the ER, they are now 69%. Another specialty particularly affected, psychiatry (60.3% in 2017, 68% in 2020)
