In a fire in a pigsty in Sterksel near Eindhoven, 450 pigs died this afternoon.
The animals are likely to have suffocated from the smoke, reports Broadcasting Brabant. The fire brigade managed to rescue 600 pigs that were in another part of the barn.
The fire broke out around 5:00 pm this afternoon. The owner of the barn himself called the emergency services.
What caused the fire is still unclear. According to a neighbor, lightning is the cause, but the fire brigade cannot say anything about that yet.
