45-Year-Old Subway Rider Killed in Bronx D Train Attack: Police Searching for Suspects

NEW YORK — A 45-year-old subway rider was killed inside a D train in the Bronx before his commute began Friday morning, police said. Authorities are now searching for three suspects believed to have been involved.

According to New York City Police, the victim was traveling on a southbound D train just before 5:00 a.m. when three people, two men and a woman, boarded at the stop. Fordham Road. One of the three sat next to the man and argued.

The disagreement soon became physical and the other two joined in and it became a three-on-one fight, according to NYPD Transit Chief Michael Kemper. The train arrived at the next station, the 182nd to 183rd Street stop, and the three suspects fled.

Police were called to the scene on Grand Concourse and found the victim unconscious. He was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly before 6 a.m.

At an afternoon news conference, Kemper said the victim suffered injuries consistent with a gunshot wound or a stab wound to the chest, but police were still unsure how the man died. Kemper said the cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner.

The victim was identified as William Álvarez, who police said lived in Metropolitan Avenue in the Bronx.

The motive for the attack was not immediately clear, police said, and it was not known whether the suspects knew the victim, although Kemper said it appeared to be “an isolated and random event.”

No weapon was recovered at the scene. Police did not know where the suspects went after fleeing the train. Authorities said video from inside the train car showing the entire incident could be a key part of their ongoing investigation.

The B and D trains bypassed the 182nd and 183rd Street stop during the morning as police investigated. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-888-57-PISTA. No arrests have been made yet.

The violence was the latest in a series of incidents on the subway. On February 12, six people were shot on the subway station platform Mt. Eden Avenue in the Bronx while teenagers exchanged gunfire. A 35-year-old man died in the shooting.

Recent data from the NYPD paints a worrying picture: 2023 saw the highest number of assaults on the subway since at least 1996. During that year, there were 570 assaults, which is a slight increase over the previous year and an average of about 1.5 incidents daily.
