44,000 euros offered for Marie-Antoinette’s shoe

A white silk shoe belonging to Marie-Antoinette, the last queen of France before the French Revolution, has fetched nearly 44,000 euros at auction, auction house Osenat reported Sunday.

The shoe in size 36 was quite popular as the bids quickly increased from the initial price. The value of the shoe was estimated at 8,000 to 10,000 euros. It has not been disclosed who tapped the shoe, apart from light wear on the silk in good condition.

Marie-Antoinette and her husband King Louis XVI ended up under the guillotine in 1793. The shoe came into the hands of a good friend of the boss of Marie-Antoinette’s chambermaids. Until the auction, 227 years later, it remained in the possession of her family.
