On August 12, 2024 44 years have passed since the declaration of the beloved Atanasovsko Lake as a protected reserve, and since 2000 Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation and the Regional Inspectorate for Environment and Water – Burgas they celebrate the holiday with various events, but always with a big cake.
This year the celebration will be at the Birdwatching Shelter and the Saberbill Trail and will include the exhibition “Across the Dunes” with paintings of dune dwellers and some of the birds of Atanasovsko Lake by the young artist Polina Stoyanova. Polina works with the BBF to protect the dunes and prepares the exhibition especially for the event, but in May during the Green Weekend she was out in the field and was really inspired by the lake.
Polina is a visual artist working in various mediums – illustration, animation, multimedia, murals. He also works as a facilitator in projects for sustainable development, using the Informal Learning methodology, for the Erasmus program. He is very interested in the possibility of conveying important messages related to our surrounding nature and biodiversity through the means of the visual. In the series of paintings dedicated to the flora and fauna of the Black Sea dunes, Polina will try to convey the beauty and variety of colors and shapes that flourish in them. The fine and gentle inhabitants of the dunes deserve our attention and admiration, and above all, they deserve to continue to exist.
For the birthday party, there will be birdwatching with tubes and binoculars, educational activities for the kids and a booth with products for a cause. For the first time in this place, there will be a musical part with the guitar performance of Mikhail Yosifov, who will present his author’s album “Morski Far”. We will not pass without the traditional cake for all guests, which this year will be with the most attractive inhabitant of the lake – the pink flamingo.
Atanasovsko lake combines conservation regimes of different nature – the northern part is maintained reservethe southern – protected areathe whole lake is Ramsar siteand together with the adjacent agricultural lands – Natura 2000 zone. It is a symbiosis between nature and man, and is an excellent example of what possibilities a Natura area offers and how it can be used for various benefits – through salt, lye, its relaxing and aesthetic value, etc.
„Come and look at birds and paintings and have fun!” – call the organizers.
The event is organized by the LIFE project “Lagoon of Life” and RIOSV Burgas.
