The previous lowest toll in a single day dates back to October 14 in Italy with 43 dead.

First country in Europe affected by the pandemic in early 2020, Italy is also one of those where the virus has been the deadliest with, to date, a total number of deaths 126,046.

Positive cases rose by 2,949 on Sunday to more than 4,216 million, according to data from Civil Protection and the Ministry of Health.

At the same time, the number of people with active coronavirus infection fell by 3,670 to 236,296, the lowest figure in seven months.

Some 34.2 million doses of the vaccine have been administered and 11.8 million people – nearly 20 percent of the population – have been fully immunized, the government said.

Health Minister Roberto Speranza on Sunday extended the entry ban for people from India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

The ban, which is a precaution against the more transmissible Indian variant of the virus, has been extended until June 21, a spokesperson said. It does not apply to Italian citizens.
