The 43rd National Sports Festival for the Disabled, Korea’s largest sports festival for the disabled, opens today with Mokpo City as the main venue, and 31 sports will be held in 38 stadiums in 12 cities and counties in Jeollanam-do over six days.

In Mokpo City, seven sports including goalball (goalball, volleyball, horseback riding, judo, track and field, soccer, and canoeing) are held in seven stadiums.

First, goalball, held at the Mokpo Multipurpose Gymnasium, is an official Paralympic sport and is a ball sport for the visually impaired that was designed in 1946 for the purpose of rehabilitating blind soldiers from World War II.

It is played by two teams of three players, and all players wear blindfolds and use a sounding rubber ball to score a goal into the opponent’s goal to determine the winner or loser.

In addition, there are 3 games including volleyball (Mokpo Bandabi Sports Center), judo (Mokpo Indoor Gymnasium), track and field (Mokpo Sports Complex), horseback riding (Ogam Temporary Equestrian Stadium), soccer (Mokpo International Soccer Center), and canoeing (Yeongsan Lake Canoe Stadium). It will be held from the 1st to the 8th amidst enthusiastic cheering and shouting.

The city is fully prepared for a safe game and is doing its best to help players demonstrate their skills.

In particular, the 43rd National Sports Festival for the Disabled will be the first in the country to broadcast all events on the Internet. In addition, the opening ceremony and other major events will be broadcast live nationwide through KBS 1TV.

The opening ceremony will be broadcast live from 5 p.m. on the 3rd, and the badminton quarterfinals to be held at Yeosu Jinnam Gymnasium on the 6th will be broadcast live from 11 a.m. The goalball quarterfinals and finals held at Mokpo Multipurpose Gymnasium will be broadcast live at 2 p.m. on the 7th, and the sitting volleyball finals held at Mokpo Bandabi Sports Center will be broadcast live at 11 a.m. on the 8th.

Mokpo Mayor Park Hong-ryul said, “So far, some of the events at the National Sports Festival for the Disabled have been broadcast online, but this year it is even more meaningful as all events are broadcast live on public TV and online.” “We ask for the interest and participation of citizens so that it can be a harmonious and moving sports festival where people and non-disabled people become one,” he said.
