The 43-year-old man who had been wanted since yesterday afternoon in a fish pond in Itteren, South Limburg, has been found dead. The police recovered his body from the water this afternoon, writes 1Limburg.
The man from Buchten was seen driving wrong-way on the A2 yesterday morning and fled when the police approached. Eventually he got stuck in a meadow in Itteren and walked into the fish pond. A search yesterday turned up nothing.
Dangerous driving
Yesterday morning, the police took action after several reports of a wrong-way driver. It was then impossible to force the man to stop and he fled. Shortly afterwards, the police received further reports about a motorist who exhibited very dangerous driving behavior. It turned out to be the same driver.
The police tracked down the man in Itteren, a village north of Maastricht. He got himself stuck there and continued on foot. He did not respond to police requests and instead walked in and out of the fish pond. Until he stayed in the water and the police could no longer find him.
Major search
An hours-long search followed. The fire brigade, two diving teams and a helicopter were deployed in vain. “Everything was done yesterday to find him,” said a police spokesperson. “But it got dark, and then the search has to stop.” The search was resumed today and today the man’s remains were found in the pond.
The police are not making any further statements about the case.
