42 cases of thrombosis have been reported in Germany following vaccination with AstraZeneca; eight of them were fatal

42 cases of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) were registered by 2 April. Thrombocytopenia, a low blood platelet count, was also reported in 23 cases.

All but seven cases were seen in women aged 20 to 63 years. Men with thrombosis ranged in age from 24 to 58 years.

The Robert Koha Institute (RKI) reported that women were vaccinated more often than men with AstraZeneca in Germany.

Eight of these thrombosis cases were fatal, five for women and three for men, according to PEI, the institute responsible for vaccine safety in Langen, Frankfurt.

Following vaccination with Pfizer / BioNTech, seven cases of CVST have been reported in Germany, three in women aged 34 to 81 years and four in men aged 81 to 86 years, but no cases of thrombocytopenia have been reported.

In Germany, 14.38 million vaccinations against Covid-19 were carried out by 2 April. PEI was reported in 407 deaths “at various intervals after vaccination” in people aged 24 to 102 years. The interval from vaccination to death ranged from less than an hour to 40 days.

In most of these deaths, patients already had one or more previous illnesses that could have been the cause of death. Additional information has been requested in some individual cases.
