If the Martians suddenly arrived in Latvia and had only an hour and a half to learn more about the nation that inhabits this land, then the best recommendation would be to watch the movie “Limousine in the Color of Midsummer Night”. Because in this film with a simple and even seemingly banal plot, the whole essence of Latvianness is masterfully included: both our good and bad qualities.
And don’t believe if someone says that Latvians do not have a sense of humor and we do not know how to laugh at ourselves: “Limousine in the color of Midsummer night” proves the opposite!
Of course, the success of the film was largely forged by the outstanding ensemble of actors: Lilita Bērziņa, Uldis Dumpis, Olga Dreģe, Baiba Indriksone, Romualds Ancāns, Līga Liepiņa, still very young Gundars Āboliņš and Diāna Zande.
The film premiered in 1981, when the average Latvian could only dream of getting a private car. Since then, life in Latvia has changed considerably, but the human passions seen in the film are still well understood by everyone.
In 40 years, “Limousine in the Color of Midsummer Night” has become a part of our life ritual, just like theater friends before Midsummer watching the play “Tailors’ Day in Silmači” or the Russians almost necessarily watch the film “Irony of Fate or Easy Spirit!”.
Movie “Limousine in the Color of Midsummer Night” is included in the Latvian cultural canon.
