The number of new infections reported in Berlin has risen again. On Wednesday evening, the Senate Health Administration announced the number of all coronavirus cases since the pandemic started at 6552. That was 49 more than the previous day. It’s the sharpest climb in almost a week.
Last Thursday there were 55 new infections. Since then, this value has decreased significantly, to just 19 new cases reported in one day. The number of active cases also rose slightly: from 399 to 407. Here too, the trend has recently declined.
However, the situation in the hospitals has eased further since Tuesday: there are currently only 185 patients treated for Covid 19, 66 of them in intensive care units. The day before, there were 194 and 67, respectively.
No new coronavirus deaths were registered on Wednesday. So far, 186 patients have died of Covid-19 disease, as many were on Tuesday.
At the currently low level, individual infection chains or locally limited outbreaks can lead to apparently large fluctuations. It was only on Tuesday that the health administration announced that the number of reproductions R rose from 0.79 to 1.07 within a week. Each infected person therefore infects an average of 1.07 people.
Corona traffic lights in Berlin are green
The R-value is one of three criteria of the so-called corona traffic light, with which the Senate wants to better assess the infection process. The Corona traffic light is still green. The yellow warning level is only reached if the R value is above 1.1 three times in a row.

The other values are also in the green: 5.04 new infections per week and 100,000 inhabitants (the so-called incidence) speak for an overall weak infection event; the threshold to yellow is 20. Only 5.4 percent of the Covid 19 places are occupied in the intensive care units, and there is only a warning from 15 percent.
The key date for the calculation was Monday, May 18, so the recently reported new infections have not yet been included in the calculation.
The Senate administration had also submitted the values to the Senate on Tuesday for an assessment of the situation. If two of the three indicators are yellow, there is a need for discussion and the preparation of possible measures is necessary. If two out of three indicators are red, new restrictions are to be imposed. The threshold for red is 1.2 three times in a row for the R value, 30 for the incidence, and 25 percent for the intensive care beds.
“The situation is fragile because it can develop very quickly,” interior senator Andreas Geisel (SPD) commented in the press conference after the Senate meeting on the increased R-value. However, he pointed out that the number of new infections was relatively low. A value above the national average can also be explained by the higher population density.
